Upstairs warmer than downstairs? Record the pattern before the call

A room-by-room observation log helps explain uneven comfort without assuming the AC has failed.

Compare upstairs and downstairs at the same time; record thermostat setting, doors, sunlight and noticed airflow for professional assessment
Wall-mounted thermostat: record its setting alongside room and time observations

Describe the pattern

Write down which rooms feel uncomfortable and when it occurs. Note the thermostat display and whether the system is running. Keep separate observations for morning and afternoon rather than reducing the issue to a single temperature impression. In a Dallas-area home, the way sun reaches different rooms can be useful context to share with a service business.

Distinguish an observation from a conclusion

A warm upstairs room does not by itself establish a failed compressor, insufficient equipment capacity or a need for replacement. Ask the business how it will assess the concern and whether its visit covers equipment operation and the relevant distribution questions. If the proposed work concerns only the AC equipment, ask what comfort issues might remain outside that scope.

Gather information without altering equipment

Record changes you have already noticed, including a new noise, a room that changed after other work or a problem that repeats at a particular time. Do not open equipment, alter controls beyond their ordinary use or block vents as an experiment. If you have existing service reports, keep them beside the observation log so the business can see the history.

Ask how the recommendation addresses the rooms

Before approving a major repair or replacement, ask how the finding relates to the uneven comfort you described. Request the proposed scope and exclusions in writing. A new unit is not a blanket promise that every room will feel the same. Confirm whether related distribution or building work needs a separate assessment; this site does not offer standalone duct redesign.
